Esther looking through a viewfinder of a yashica A camera

Esther J Kontny

As an artist primarily working with photography and writing; I have spent time experimenting within these two mediums, which are constantly informing one another. Exploring the limitations of the medium as well as the ways in which people interact with it have led me to my current work which investigates how landscapes relate to our internal world. The act of making can always be traced back to the desire to express or decompress. As I exhale and click the shutter, I first need to inhale the environment that surrounds me.

While I prefer shooting medium format, my Yashica-A or Mamiya 645. Most often I have a Minolta XG-1 on hand when I’m out and about. My film of choice is Kodak Ektar because of the rich color and high contrast, although I love to try out new film stock any chance I get.

If you have any questions about my work or want to talk about film shoot me an email.

Cheers!
